As part of her law studies my wife is currently taking a course on Israeli criminal procedure. Here's a short summary:
- You have a right to remain silent. If you choose to exercise that right everything you do not say will be used against you.
- You have a right for an attorney. You just have to tell us everything before we let you retain one.
- If they beat the crap out of you while obtaining a confession the confession is unacceptable, but you have to present the crap.
- While a confession obtained by force is unacceptable, all the other evidence is.
- Evidence obtained during an illegal search is acceptable.
- Our judges are highly trained professionals, so a judge could see all the evidence first, rule on its acceptability, and still be able to pronounce an impartial verdict.
