I am tyring to order a notebook in the US that someone is going to bring to Israel. I also would like to order a wireless router to go with it, so that I can share my home internet connection between the desktop and the notebook wireless. I need an advice of what to look for - as the standards in the US and Israel might be different (DSL vs. ADSL - for example) and I want to get it right the first time around for the obvious reasons. So if you or someone you know have experience in the matter - please help.

First of all, why don't you buy this all right in Israel? I believe you do have reasons for that and ask mostly out of curiosity.

In any case, the hardware that interfaces with public networks (ADSL/WiFi router in your case) should be bought locally — localized models are typically certified by the appropriate regulators and guaranteed (to some degree) to work smoothly with your operator's network.

Finally, ADSL is not so incompatible between countries (DSL, or xDSL, is an umbrella term covering many diverse technologies, ADSL included). And even where there are incompatibilities, they can be solved by installing appropriate firmware from the vendor's site.

Price and technology lag of, I'd say, about half a year. Although the router alone does not make a lot of difference.

This seems to be the consensus.

Thanks.
